Retention and Disposal of historic weather charts held by NIWA.

Dear Climate and Weather enthusiast of New Zealand.

Regarding attached DRAFT appraisal of future of 'Park Road Store' weather maps:

This is to invite your comment on NIWA plans to dispose and/or transfer to Archives NZ historic weather charts held in NIWA paper archives. Details of the plans can be found in attached draft plan developed with Archives NZ.

In Summary:

NIWA (National Institute for Water and Atmospheric Research Ltd) has a large holding of physical historical paper records which are of 25 years of age or older, called “Park Road Store”. NIWA has observed a dropping use of the historic records and therefore decided that the current level of use of the facility does not justify its operation. A large part of these records comprise rolls of meteorological charts, roughly A1 size, on which are plotted both the meteorological analysis and observations, dating from the early 20th century. Whilst the charts are information rich, they are rarely referenced and the relevant information is available now from other digital sources.

NIWA recommends:

  • to dispose of the newer records dating after the year 1978, as the information is available through Digital Climate Information Systems (provided by the ECMWF and NCEP reanalyses data);
  • to transfer the older records dating prior to 1979 (information not continuously covered by other digital information) to Archives New Zealand for permanent storage. NIWA proposes to do that through a one-off appraisal by which the records will be properly curated, catalogued and put into appropriate storage.

Could I please have your comments on these plans emailed to: by Friday, September 13th.

Regards, Jochen

Do any of these records include those from the South Pacific Islands that the former New Zealand Meteorological Service manage and operate until the late mid 1980s/early 1990s?
