Abstract:

Island groundwater resources are very sensitive to climate change and variability; they are also sensitive to non-climate stresses and anthropogenic environmental alteration. Although the basic principles of these sensitivities are known, local geologic and environmental conditions exert strong controls over the nature and vulnerability of the resource. For this reason, and because accurate local predictions of future climate cannot currently be made, a practical but comprehensive water-resource assessment is a necessary first step in preparing for future environmental changes of all types.
