Abstract: 

Hourly wind reports from an automatic weather station onboard a research vessel have shown interesting structure i n the wind field around New Zealand, and in particular, the existence of areas of strong winds tens of kilometres wide and hundreds of kilometres long formed by the interaction of a stable airstream and the orography of New Zealand.
