Abstract:

A heavy shower occurred at New Plymouth Airport on 19 August 1994 when cloud tops were anomalously low. It is suggested that the narrow line of cumulus cloud responsible for the showers was enhanced by low level convergence and horizontal wind shear, caused by a developing area of strong low-level wind west of the Taranaki coast.
